Abjuring the Realm-Texas Style

At the recent national LS conference, Dr. Hill encouraged us to continue abjuring the realm. In Texas, that takes on some thought-provoking issues concerning the whole southwest. First, when functioning as a sovereign Republic, Texas laid claim to the island of Cozumel, and also the whole southwestern part of America all the way to California. Sam Houston discouraged the Texas lawmakers from acting on those claims. In an ironic twist, he later wished for Texas to act on the claim of land extending to California. If Texas acted on the legitimate claims it has, that would mean that Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Phoenix and Cozumel are all part of the Lone Star Republic. I have my doubts that Texas will ever exercise those claims, yet in the times in which we live, people are making claims concerning the mythical land of Aztlan, where the southwest is claimed to be the Aztec homeland. The Aztec civilization NEVER existed in the southwest. Another wild claim is that concerning reparations for slavery. Which slavery group will receive reparations? There were blacks, whites, and Indians that served as slaves in the 19th century. Each group could make a claim. IF such claims are taken seriously, and IF the claims on the mythic Aztlan are taken seriously, then Texas and Texians should reconsider the historic claims that we have on those areas of California, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, and Cozumel.

Consider that although the united States never wanted to recognize the claims of Texas on New Mexico and other southwestern territory, yet they paid out out damages in court cases where they failed to recognize Texas sovereignty. The legal precedent exists that legitimizes the Republic’s claim. What does this mean for the League of the South? It means refusing to see the claims of the united States on the southwest as legitimate. The legitimate claim lies with the Republic of Texas. In the Treaty of Velasco, Mexico surrendered all their legitimate claims on Texas. Mexico has NO legitimate claims on Texas.
