Gonzales and Tyranny

On the morning October 2, 1835, a group of Texians stood on the banks united in opposition to the tyranny of the centralized government of Mexico. The Mexican government had shown a disregard for the churches, limited religious freedom, and prohibited some religions from being allowed at all. The Mexican government had also dictated the school curriculum, regulated how business was done and had instigated some gun grabbing amoung the colonists. They also had a habit of changing the laws, taxes and regulations arbitrarily. They operated like many police states, putting people in jail for little or no reason. The colonists had their fill of tyranny. They decided that it was time to stop the tyranny. There had been rumblings of removing all the colonists who had immigrated from the American States. The government of Mexico was also taking steps to become more centralized.

Many of the themes and storylines of the Texas Secession are still valid today. Texians are still facing a tyrannical government that shows disregard for churches and religion. The centralized government still wants to limit and control guns. The centralized government still wants to dictate school curriculum and business practices. The centralized government wants to increase taxes and change laws and regulations on a whim, even though it is 2007. The tyrant had absolute authority over the centralized government. In 1835, there was an uproar over combining Texas and Coahuilla, in 2007 there is an uproar over combining Texas into the North American Union. There are so many things in common, it is almost deja vu. The only things missing is for 18 Texians to stand in opposition to the tyrannical government waving a “come and take it flag”.

On this anniversary of the Battle of Gonzales, let us meditate on the event and the times in which we live. Give thanks to the Almighty for those who stood against tyranny on that October morning and ask if you are ready to do likewise when the time comes.
Free Texas!
