Deception in the News

The main stories that I focused on yesterday concerned lies and deception. It seems that when people can not win their case with better ideas, they resort to lies and distortions.

In the case of the Confederate statue at Denton, student activist Aron Duhon is pushing for a petition to remove the Confederate statue there. The campaign is one where the old adage of confederacy=racism is used to try and remove the statue. In his five minutes of public attention garnered by the local television station, he spews the mantra of hate, claiming ‘bad vibes’ when he passes the statue. He specifically focuses on the word hero and how he does not consider the Confederate soldier a hero and then tells about his petition that he and other UNT (University of North Texas) students were hosting. What was not told is how his campaign actually got underway in January with press releases submitted to independent news services (indymedia.com which intentionally takes a radical, activist stance with news). He is also the person who advocates that monthly class walkouts to protest the war. Although he claims being a graduate student there, he has not researched the war very much based on his rhetoric.

In another case of deception, my local CONgress critter, Nick Lampson was down in these parts. As the election is nearing, he is portraying himself as a moderate, middle of the road kind of person. He deplored “gotcha” politics in his local speech. “Both parties are going to have to find a ways to meet in the middle”. His answer to illegal immigration is that ‘we have to get these people jobs’. He addressed financial spending saying, “we have a four or five year window to put ourselves on a right track or else we could go the way of Rome.” Although this is nice rhetoric, his voting record shows someone in lock step with the democrats and giving away money to foreign nations as the first priority in HR1. He also receives large financial support for his campaign from San Francisco, which indicates where his loyalties lie. He associates with Al Gore. He supported the measure to express honor the Mohammedean faith, rather than honor those who survived the Iranian captivity. He also voted to ban incandescent light bulbs and using more biofuels. His actions show that the people and the needs of the 22nd Congressional district are not his first priority. He deplores gotcha politics, since he can be gotten for so much. I wonder if he is going to support Nancy Pelosi’s idea of taxing 401 (k) accounts and using those funds to support illegal immigrants? He probably did not mention that one to the press.
As the good book says, “You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.”
