An interesting bit of news was in USA Today. In a recently conducted survey, citizens in the States were ranked by whether they considered religion an important part of their lives. Texas ranked as #11 on the most religious of the States with 74% of the respondents reporting that religion was important to them. The Southern States were at the top, while the Yankee states were…at the bottom. 7 of the bottom 10 positions were held by Yankee States, with the lowest being Vermont at 42%. Although the question asked was “Is religion an important part of your daily life?”, the results are telling. The writers of the study performed their usual spin on the findings. The writers want to attribute the results to race. Rather than race, could it be that they call if the Bible belt for a reason? Could it be that the South is still a predominately Christian area? Could it be that Southerners still value the Bible? Could this be one of the reasons that the tyrant Lincoln made Bibles contraband in the South during the Yankee invasion and occupation. The empire still does not like the Bible in their courtrooms or court houses.
My pappy once told me that a man’s religion will dictate his politics. Could the findings of this study be telling something about the political leanings of the regions as well?
What it does show is that one’s religion or faith is more a part of daily life in Southern States. This is no surprise to Southrons. Southrons know that many times it is daily faith that keeps them going.
Although it was not asked, some questions are raised by the study. If religion is not an important part of your daily life, then what is? Are they a bunch of backsliders? Since man cannot live in a vacuum, something is part of the daily lives in the Yankee States, and it is not recognized as religion. There is something that drives the people in those States, whether religion or logic.
It does say that religion is a big part of life in the South. Since religion also carries with it a moral structure, it follows that the Southern States place a great emphasis on morals. As the economy worsens, what are the people in the Northern States going to turn to if not religion?
The study is sure to generate many lively discussions.
