Science is still science in Texas

The city of Austin has been the scene of great debate in the past few days as lawmakers have looked at how the theory of evolution would be presented in Texas textbooks. The previous standard of discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each theory was seen as unacceptable to many evolution supporters. They wanted their position presented without question (much like an oppressive religion). They wanted evolution presented as THE scientific truth. Fortunately the Texas School Board stuck to their guns on continuing to keep science discussed in a scientific manner. They compromised and now students will “analyze, evaluate and critique” each theory.

This is encouraging in a day when so many elected people compromise away all their integrity. It is encouraging that science, with all its theories will be analyzed, evaluated and critiqued, from evolution, and the myth of global overpopulation (such as espoused by Nina Federoff who advises the empire on scientific matters) to the myth of global warming. Many of the myths in science need scrutiny and scientific debate. Since Texas is a large purchaser of textbooks, this decision will impact many other States as well. It is hopeful that science will not be presented as religion, but rather as Science with all the debate and discussion. It was only through the debate of men like Newton and Galileo that progress was made in the field of science.
